Job Description
Position Summary

Promote fire and life safety in the community. Conduct fire code compliance inspections, fire cause investigations, public education, and fire code enforcement. These tasks are illustrative only and may include other related duties.

Salary Ranges

Deputy Fire Marshal I: $34.1840 - $44.6763

Deputy Fire Marshal II: $37.4934 - $49.0021


Full-Time, 40 hours per week

Essential Functions

Performs inspections of commercial, industrial, and other structures to determine potential and existing fire hazards, the adequacy of fire protective equipment, and general compliance with fire prevention regulations; discusses violations and corrective actions with building owners, contractors, or their representatives.

Conducts fire origin cause investigations and assists prosecution by preparing investigation findings and testifying in court.

Prepares accurate inspection reports, detailed documentation of fire investigations and written correspondence.

Researches, interprets, and applies codes relating to fire and life safety. Participates in pre-construction planning meetings; performs fire protection system compliance inspections in conjunction with the Community Development Department; position does not conduct independent fire protection system plan review.

Prepares and conducts public education presentations and demonstrations, and participates in training and workshops.

Researches, writes and administers grants in support of current and future Fire Department programs.

Prepares and disseminates information to the media; responds to questions, concerns and complaints from the general public.

Assists in the preparation for Fire Department open houses, public education presentations and demonstrations, and conducts trainings and workshops.

Conducts seasonal and special program inspections.

Provides interviews, referrals, education, and maintenance of records in support of the Youth Fire Setter Intervention program.

Acts ethically and honestly; applies ethical standards of behavior to daily work activities and interactions. Builds confidence in the City through own actions.

Operates and drives vehicles and/or equipment safely and legally.

Delivers excellent customer service to diverse audiences.

Maintains effective work relationships.

Adheres to all City and Department policies.

Arrives to work, meetings, and other work-related functions on time and maintains regular job attendance.

Qualifications and Skills

Education and Experience
Deputy Fire Marshal I - High school diploma or equivalent.

Deputy Fire Marshal II - High school diploma or equivalent. Three years full-time paid fire prevention and/or fire suppression experience with a municipality or other government fire agency.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to speak in public. Ability to serve the business community, community organizations, and community members in a positive and professional manner.

Experience with researching, writing and administering grants is preferred.

Knowledge and understanding of the basic concepts and principles of code enforcement and application.

Ability to research the Oregon Fire Code and other related fire and safety codes and apply this information in decision making. Must have the ability to develop innovative alternatives and solutions that meet the requirements of regulations and the needs of the public.

Ability to get along well with coworkers and the public and maintain effective work relationships.

Adherence to City of Corvallis Fire Department Operating Guidelines as applicable to Deputy Fire Marshals.

Adherence to City and Department policies regarding smoking, drugs, alcohol, and grooming.

Ability to make appropriate decisions in non-emergency and emergency situations.

Excellent public service skills under emergency and non-emergency conditions.

Ability to use a computer to perform the essential functions of the position.

Special Requirements
Deputy Fire Marshal I - Ability to obtain the following certifications by the end of probationary period: ICC Fire Inspector I, NFPA Fire Inspector I, NFPA Instructor I, OSFM Fire & Life Safety Competency Recognition at the level of Fire Inspector I, and NFPA Fire Investigator.

Deputy Fire Marshal II - Possession of the following certifications is required in addition to all certifications required for Deputy Fire Marshal I: ICC Fire Inspector II, NFPA Fire Inspector II, OSFM Fire & Life Safety Competency Recognition at the level of Fire Inspector II or greater and the ability to achieve recognition within a year. Youth Fire Setter Intervention Specialist certification is preferred.

Deputy Fire Marshal I and II
By end of probationary period: National Incident Management System ICS- 100, 200, 700, 800, AWR-160.

American Red Cross Basic First Aid and American Heart Association CPR certifications or higher.

Valid Oregon driver's license, a minimum of 3 years licensed driving experience, and a driving record that meets the standards set by the City of Corvallis and Oregon Revised Statutes.

Must successfully meet the physical demands of duties in accordance with NFPA Standard 1582.

Must successfully pass a comprehensive background investigation including criminal history check. Ability to obtain Oregon State Police Criminal Justice Information Systems clearance.
