JOB DESCRIPTION
Glendale Plywood
 
Position Title:  Mentor Trainee
Reports to:  Mentor Trainee         
Department: Glendale Plywood
 
Hours per shiftEmployee works 8-hour shifts with a 20 minute paid lunch and two 10 minute breaks; Employee works 10-hour shifts, with three 10- minute breaks, and 30- minute break. 
                                   
Wage:  Level 1, Level 2
 
Position Purpose: This position requires the mentor trainee to serve in the following positions, as directed by their supervisor for production and cross-training purposes. 
 
Polyline Operator: The primary purpose of a polyline operator is to patch panels coming from the presses by using putty and epoxy to upgrade the finish quality of plywood sheets.  Use a putty knife and poly gun to spread putty/epoxy on panel surfaces.  Use router to remove all defects as outlined by APA standards.  Work with co-workers in a continuous cycle while maintaining the flow of panels through the patch line.
 
Dryer FeederDryer Feeder will keep the veneer dryer full with quality veneer while maintaining safety and quality by feeding sheets into the dryer. The worker will feed while moving back and forth on a platform in front of different sized stacks of green veneer. Feeder will keep up with the pace of the dryer, while maintaining safety and quality standards as outlined in the Job Hazard Analysis, Standard Operating Procedures, and other requirements as directed by the supervisor for the safe and efficient operation of the plant.
 
Dryer Grader: Dryer Grader will accurately and safely grade dry veneer at the end of the dryer.  Using proper pulling and stacking techniques, the grader will pull and stack veneer in appropriate cart. Keep up with the pace of the dryer while maintaining safety and quality standards as outlined in the Job Hazard Analysis, Standard Operating Procedures and other requirements as directed by the supervisor for the safe and efficient operation of the plant.
 
Raimann Operator: The Raimann machine is used to patch defects in veneer core stock by plugging holes, defects, and loose knots in veneer.  The operator moves veneer one sheet at a time from stacks onto a table where he/she plugs the defects. The operator uses one foot pedal to plug the veneer and another foot pedal to raise and lower the veneer loads and to run the taper which is used to hold some plugs into the sheet.  The operator must also keep Raimann full of Raimann strips (“plug stock” used to plug veneer defects) and be familiar with the safe and efficient operation of the strip saw (which cuts the plug stock into strips).  Keep up with the expected production target, while maintaining safety and quality standards as outlined in the Job Hazard Analysis, Standard Operating Procedures, and other requirements as directed by the supervisor for the safe and efficient operation of the plant.
 
Sheet Station: To ensure that the proper panel construction and sheet alignment occurs. To repair open defects with wood patches to meet grade of veneer being used. Operators ensure that sheets are tight against moving backboard chain and that the sheets extend past the laser line indicator.
Position Functions:
Essential Functions*
These duties are designated as ADA Essential Functions and must be performed in this job.
Polyline Operator
Patch panels using special putty and epoxy to upgrade quality of plywood panels.
Knowledge of plywood grades (defect size, splits, knots) to ensure proper grading criteria set by the mill.
Keep an accurate log of downtime, grade type and production paperwork.
Knowledge of how to properly use putty and/or epoxy to upgrade panels.
Use of a putty knife, panel knife and use of special spreading techniques.
Use of a router to remove defects to be later filled in with putty and/or epoxy.
Use of poly gun to fill all defects with poly (requires repetitive squeezing).
Worker is to perform job while maintaining safety and quality standards as outlined by the Job Hazard Analysis, Standard Operating Procedures and other requirements as directed by the supervisor for safe and efficient operation of the plant.
Hand eye coordination. Frequently reach, sometimes bend, climb, crawl, kneel, lift, twist, squat, stoop and push/pull with back and legs. Occasionally reach above/below shoulders. Climb stairs & ladders.
Dryer Feeder
The worker is responsible for reaching forward, picking up individual sheets of veneer with one or both hands, and moving them forward several inches so that they can be picked up by the rollers of the veneer dryer equipment.
Movement back and forth on a platform as necessary, pushing sheets forward and properly aligning them to the receiving end of the dryer. Feeder will remove overlaps, ensure all fed sheets are unstacked, and discarding wane sheets as necessary.
Feeder must ensure proper amount of veneer sheets are fed with each dryer cycle, according to supervisor expectations and production needs.
The worker will be responsible, through a series of pedals and buttons, for moving green veneer onto a scissors platform and maintaining the proper height at that platform at a comfortable waist/chest level.
At times, the machine will jam or plug up which will at times require the worker to remove or assist in removing the blockage.  Both human and mechanical assistance will be available upon request, should the worker be unable to perform this activity alone. Proper Lock-out-tag-out procedures must be performed. Worker must use and understand dryers’ manual button operating system for power control.
Breaking of other dryer employees and rotation to different positions for cross-training purposes or to facilitate production as designated by the supervisor. Job duties for other positions are outlined in their individual Job Descriptions.
Assist co-workers or Maintenance personnel in basic maintenance procedures or fixing dryer plug-ups. Perform weekly maintenance, including greasing and oiling of machine parts as necessary for proper dryer function.
Perform routine weekly dryer cleanings: including the removal of cans/tubes and other machine parts from dyer basement, using water hoses to remove debris from inside the dryer,  shoveling and sorting debris into proper waste boxes (by size and makeup), and replacing cleaned machine parts.
Feeder is responsible for cleanup activity during down times, changeovers, and between shifts.  This activity will consist of removing veneer scrap or debris from the work area using a broom, rake, or shovel.
Dryer Grader
Visual inspection of veneer sheets and accurate grading of veneer by referring to the plant’s dry veneer grade spec sheet. Grading based on the number and size of knots, splits, and open defects. Responsible for understanding and applying veneer grade spec information in the grading process.
Pull dry veneer sheets from the dryer onto a dry veneer conveyor and into proper carts according to grade. Grader is required to pull anywhere from 6-20 veneer sheets a minute into proper-grade carts.
Worker is required to stand and walk constantly for 8 hours. Worker must use shoulders, arms, hands and wrists to pull veneer into carts. Larger pieces of veneer are slid from conveyor to cart while smaller pieces of veneer may be lifted between waist and shoulder level and carried 1’- 5’ to the cart
Grader is to help push full carts of veneer out to be picked up by forklift.  Full carts weigh between 500 to 650 pounds. Grader is to push back the empty cart after forklift has picked up veneer

Raimann Operator
Operator turns the upper body roughly 90 degrees to each side to pull veneer sheets on and off the Raimann table.
Operator turns roughly 150-175 times per hour.
The operator uses hands, wrists, and forearms to grasp, move, and release the veneer sheets roughly 150-175 times per hour.
Each piece of veneer is 4’x8’ and weighs approximately 14-37 lbs.
Operation of the foot pedal switches requires left foot movement roughly 350 times per hour and right foot movement roughly 250 times per hour.
After a reasonable probation period employees are required to continuously improve production rates until they have reached production expectations. These expectations vary with veneer grades as some grades are harder to plug than others.
Operator will be responsible for accurately reporting downtime on daily written reports.
Responsible for calculating production averages daily. Other reports and calculations required as needed.
Responsible for filling Glue System when needed.
Sheet Station Operator
Visual inspection of panel/sheet quality as it travels past the operator, including but not limited to core line inspections, grade inspections of sheets, and inspection for glue-spread, repairs, and debris.
Monitor sheets of veneer dropping from sheet station and ensure proper drop alignment by pushing or pulling sheets, with extended arms against resistance, to correct alignment locations on the chain.
Ensure that all sheets meet the minimum width requirements and that narrow sheets are discarded in dumpster or reclaim rack and replaced with on-grade sheets. Ensure correct veneer/sheet thickness for the product under assembly.
Flatten all bowed, curved, and uneven sheets on the line and remove unintentional sheet overlaps to prevent hang ups inside the glue booth
Repair defects by removing displaced or outlying sheet scraps and discarding them in the dumpster, patching sheet defects when necessary, and replacing plugs with minimal down time.
Ensure sheets with defects too large to repair are discarded in dumpster or reclaim rack and replaced with on-grade sheets.
Communicate (verbally and through audio systems) with sheet operators, carousel operators, forklift drivers, and leads to ensure safety, proper breaking and/or rotation, smooth machinery operation, and changeovers.
Rotate, as needed, to different sheet stations and positions for cross-training purposes or to facilitate production. (Job duties for other positions are outlined in their individual Job Descriptions.)
Properly operate sheet station machinery using button panels, and adjust photo-eye for proper load height
Ensure sheet hang-ups in machinery are reported, using proper communication and safety regulations to remove or reposition hung-up sheets.
Frequently clean glue tips to prevent dry-outs. 
Keep work area free of large debris and discarded sheets while sheet stations are operating by lifting debris into dumpsters and reclaim containers. 
 
 
Non-Essential Functions
These duties are secondary in nature and are not classified as ADA essential.
Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisor for production or cross-training purposes.
Perform cleanup duties as down-time allows.

Personal Protective Equipment Required:  (1) Eye Protection. (2) Hearing Protection.  (3) Rubber or Leather based gloves when handling dry veneer. (4) Approved Footwear.
 
Physical Demands:  See the attached Job/Task Evaluation and Physical Capabilities portion; Lay Up Flex is required to perform a combination of standing, walking, climbing stairs at elevated lay-up line. Worker will bend, twist, squat, push/pull (back legs) using waist, shoulders, arms, hands, and wrists to manipulate sheets of veneer on line. Worker will have to visually identify defects and grades associated with veneer. 
 
SkillsMust have excellent hand eye coordination. Use vision/hearing continuously.  Reading and speech required to communicate comprehension of Job Hazard Analysis, machine specific lockout procedures, monthly safety training, etc.  Worker generally works alone with little supervision.  Operators must be self-directed in identifying and efficiently completing each task. Ability to prioritize, organize and make necessary decisions.
 
Safety:  (1) Do only maintenance you are trained to do and keep all body parts out of machinery. (2) Always use our 14 step lockout/tagout procedure before doing any maintenance, clearing jams, or getting into machinery for any reason; be aware of stored energy. (3) Always use proper body mechanics (ex: don’t over reach, get help as needed to push loads out). (4) Use proper PPE (gloves, eye protection, hearing protection).  (5) Be aware of and communicate with your co-worker at all times (ex: forklift driver). (6) Will be required to read and write during safety training.
