  • The Automotive Technology Program is open Monday through Thursday, from 7 am to 4 pm.
  • There may be a few times within the academic year that evenings and weekends will be required, based on events.
  • Schedule may vary with hours increasing during peak periods up to 40 hours per week, up to 1039 hours in a 12-month period.

Required QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education:
  • Two (2) years of post-secondary education or training in Automotive Tech or related field
  • Master ASE Automotive certification (in all eight areas), or ability to acquire certification within one year.
OR
  • Equivalent education and professional experience in Automotive Technology.
Required Experience:
Two (2) years of experience in a professional Automotive Technology field that would include one or more of the following areas: engine repair, automatic transmission/transaxle, manual drive trains and axles, suspension and steering, brakes, electrical/electronic systems, heating, and air conditioning, and engine performance.

Position Purpose:
The purpose of this position is to assist students in learning tasks related to Automotive ASE certification skills.
Essential Functions:
  • Assist student learning in Automotive ASE certification skill sets and equipment.
  • Work Safely and within guidelines established by OSHA, college, and division.
  • Flexibility to rotate student support in the organization and instructional duties within the shop, by coordinating with the Instructor and other Specialists.
  • Assist students in their assigned student materials or self-instructional modules.
  • Assist in student learning in microcomputers, copiers, audiovisual equipment, calculators, scantrons, calipers, cameras, and other automotive labs/shop equipment.
  • Assist in the setup and execution of the automotive lab to support student learning.
  • Supervise students in the tool room, use equipment and materials; obtain materials and equipment, and prepare and maintain supplies.
  • Inspect tools and equipment to ensure good working order, and make recommendations to purchase tools and equipment.
  • Process work orders, conduct safety inspections, prepare safety reports, and be the liaison with the College Facilities department.
  • Keep an inventory of hazardous materials and dispose of them, and be compliant with college policies and procedures.
  • Assess individual students' work and tutoring needs.
  • Provide support and encouragement to students.
  • Lead study sessions for small groups of students.
  • Remain non-judgmental and impartial when serving students.
  • Accurately track a student's progress.
  • Positively work as part of a team; may assist faculty and the division office with marketing and recruitment for the Automotive Technology program.
  • Problem-solving and managing sensitive information with appropriate awareness of FERPA standards; maintaining confidentiality and sensitivity to the privacy needs of students.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervision Statement:
Reports to and works under the general supervision of the dean. An instructor or lab coordinator may be available to assign work, provide priorities and troubleshoot problems on a daily basis. Work is performed independently using specialized experience and training. Work is reviewed for the quality of assistance provided.

This position may have the responsibility to assign tasks, provide priorities, and train student assistants, volunteers, and hourly employees.
Physical Demands/Working Environment:
Work safely and adhere to college workplace safety rules and regulations. This position requires that an employee is able to stand and work on a concrete floor for five (5) or more hours/day. Work may require transporting materials up to fifty (50) pounds with or without support. This position works indoors with the shop doors open frequently and can be exposed to cold temperatures.

  • Current skills, ineffective methods, and knowledge related to a broad range of Automotive technologies including brakes, electrical and electronic systems, heating and air conditioning, engine repair, engine performance, suspension and steering, manual drive trains and axles, and automatic transmissions/transaxles skills.
