Job Description

ENSCO Rail provides Track Inspection Services for railroads and transit systems worldwide and is currently seeking an entry level Inspection Service Engineer to conduct railroad track inspections involving the use of measurement tools, electronics, and computer operations.

The engineer will be working with optical, lasers, inertial sensors and vision-based camera systems that collect data real time which is then compiled into a report analyzed and delivered to our customer. This position also includes vehicle and system maintenance and annual system calibrations. The position will require working with ENSCO Rail's inspection systems and equipment in a railroad environment.

Working along with the EN
SCO Rail test directors and associated engineering groups in our rail division, we're providing the very best track inspections systems and services to railroads all over the world.
Testing and System Services duties would include but are not limited to:

  • Coordinating travel and customer meet up before each test.
  • Driving ENSCO Rail Inspection Trucks to and from our customer sites throughout the US and Canada.
  • Run inspection equipment: start/stop features, monitoring machine vision data to verify rail defects, keeping accurate logs of daily activities, and generating reports.
  • Routine vehicle maintenance, system service, and cleaning.
  • Interfacing with customer and serving as primary ENSCO contact on site.
  • Field service, troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of equipment on railway vehicles at various domestic and international customer sites, as well as in our facilities.
  • Installation, calibration and testing of track inspection systems on railway vehicles.
  • Assembly, test, debug and repair of electronic circuit boards, cables, component chassis wiring, sensor assemblies and associated computer equipment.
  • Support design engineers in the assembly, test and debug of new products.
  • Field operations will require travel that can range from a few days to 3 weeks in duration depending on the test locations.

Qualifications Required (Skills)

Some formal academic or technicall training in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent with six months of relevant experience
  • Demonstrated experience in the following areas:
    • Understanding and troubleshooting of complex software-electro-mechanical systems, including both software and hardware functionality and interactions between the two.
    • Working independently at customer sites investigating, diagnosing, and resolving system problems.
    • Electro-Mechanical system level assembly, testing, troubleshooting and repair.
    • Performing data analysis to troubleshoot electro-mechanical data acquisition systems.
  • Ability to perform the following:
    • Effectively communicate with customers by telephone and in person to diagnose and resolve system problems.
    • Perform basic electrical/electronic circuit analysis.
    • Effectively use multi-meters, oscilloscopes, function generators and general laboratory test equipment for testing and troubleshooting equipment to the component level.
  • Climb a 15 foot high ladder to gain access to railroad vehicles.
  • Work in tight spots under and about railway vehicles.
  • Work 12 hour shifts as necessary when on field assignments.
  • Work in inclement weather as needed.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pound objects and carry them a distance of 150 feet.
  • Proficient in multiple software applications (Microsoft Windows Operating System)
  • Soldering experience (cable assemble)
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work alone and with minimal supervision
  • Ability to travel for field installation, testing and repair activities up to 75% of the time
  • Good written and verbal communication skills for customer interface and report preparation
  • Ability to read drawings, electrical schematics and wiring diagrams

Selected candidate must pass a railroad required e-RAILSAFE security background check and complete all online safety tests before working on any railroad property. The selected candidate may be required to submit to fingerprinting, drug screening, and additional background investigations in connection with this position
Wearing safety equipment (hardhat, steel-toe boots, protective vest and protective eye glasses) when working on railroad properties is a requirement. -ENSCO will provide all the necessary safety equipment

Qualifications Desired

BS degree in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent.
  • Experience with the assembly and testing of electro-mechanical systems that involve optical, laser and inertial sensors
  • Familiarity with railroad testing or inspection equipment
  • Experience working in a railroad or construction environment
  • Experience with sensors and data acquisition systems
