Job Description

Analyzes, researches, and designs components or a system of components to develop or improve existing products while reducing cost, enhancing performance, and improving manufacturability of non-metallic / plastics components and systems. Designs products or systems of diverse/difficult scope and complexity for assigned programs using a variety of engineering principles.

1. Develops conceptual and detailed designs by analyzing product specifications, performance requirements, and existing manufacturing capability. Performs diverse and complex design, modification, and evaluation of mechanical components, subsystems, and systems by applying engineering principles and developing new or unique analysis tools as required in the area of plastics components and materials, injection molding process, and plastics applications in engineering. 2. Conducts complex analyses and devises tests pertaining to the development of new designs, methods, materials or processes and completes required documentation by applying advanced engineering principles and company standards, and generating detailed reports, procedures, or change proposals. Utilizes experience in material properties and characteristics of non-metallics to recommend design engineering solutions involving engineered plastics. Prepares documents and presents results to internal and external customers. Determines required actions, performs completion of tasks, and publishes findings and/or results. 3. Develops acceptance, engineering evaluation, development and qualification/certification test plans, procedures, and reports. Compiles and analyzes operation, test, and research data to establish performance standards for newly designed product. 4. Investigates pertinent design factors such as ease of manufacture, injection molding development investigations to help core design engineers select optimized nonmetallic materials. 5. Prepares preparation of product or system layout and detailed drawings, assembly drawings, and schematics by coordinating with design engineers, interpreting customer and functional requirements, or by using engineering computer-aided design tools such as CAD design software (Inventor, Catia, Pro/E etc.) and predictive analysis experience using Mold Flow or similar software. 6. Reviews drawings to ensure clarity, completeness, form, fit, functionality, and conformity to standards, procedures, and specifications. Identifies design errors, omissions, and other deficiencies, and directs revisions and improvements to engineers or other designers. 7. Refines and enhances products and processes by applying continuous improvement principles and techniques in design and manufacturing areas. Recommends actions by analyzing and interpreting data and making comparative analyses. Analyzes proposed changes in methods and materials. 8. Maintains professional and technical knowledge in the areas of plastics and non-metallics by attending educational workshops, reviewing technical publications, benchmarking best practices, and/or participating in professional associations. 9. Represents company on high-level projects. Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed. Work assignments may include cross-functional or project team responsibilities. Bachelor's degree (BS) in Mechanical, Industrial, Aerospace, Agriculture, or Automotive Engineering or in a related technical discipline. Demonstrated ability to perform the essential functions of the job typically acquired through ten years in engineering field, including five years in plastics and injection molding with three of those years specifically in designing plastics / non-metallic components.
